Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich Would Have You Believe YOU Are The Enemy!

Dear Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich (spokesman for tyranny), your tyrant pigs aren’t called peace officers anymore, as they escalate situations and provoke danger. Cops haven’t helped to de-escalate situations since the 80’s. They are trained to fear for their lives and live in that fear on a daily basis making them more of a radical extremist than any of the constitutionalists you are waging war with. In fact, SCOTUS has ruled that pig cops don’t have to protect citizens anymore. I don’t even know who is more tyrannical these days. You, seeking to go after people who legally can stock pile their weapons as law abiding citizens? Or SCOTUS, for allowing cops to run rapid like wolves with rabies, with their egos set on high alert, while walking all over the citizens they swore to protect, but instead demonize, hurt, kill, rape, and torture, all while not being held accountable to any reprimand? God forbid evil cops even spend one day in jail as tyrants tend to set them free….Cop lives are not worth anymore or any less than the people they swore an oath too. And you’re the kind of tyrant who would set them free.

It sounds like you are trying to sell us a war against ourselves? I just listened to you for 2 hours trying to use emotion to convince us that the answer to people wanting to be free from government intrusion is to make them the enemy??? Most people just want to be left alone. I will tell you right now that I am peaceful, but if an armed individual approaches me attempting to generate revenue through extortion I would think that he was the aggressor… how could I be the aggressor just because I am pulled over submitting to the emergency light? I am waiting for my chance to use litigation in federal district court to help you realize what it really costs when you have your organization unnecessarily escalating your revenue generating (and also unconstitutional) “traffic stops”. I don’t care if you redefine “constitutionalist” or “patriot” to “violent racist extremist”… but I see what you are trying to do there.

I’ve already given you my opinion on the Sheriff and his positions, if you want to read more about that, you can check out my previous post on the subject. The topic of discussion here will be the so-called “myth of police militarization.”

Criminal Justice Professor Peter B. Kraska defines police militarization as “the process whereby civilian police increasingly draw from, and pattern themselves around, the tenets of militarism and the military model.” So basically, a militarized police would strive to appear and act more like soldiers and less like peace officers.

In November of 2013, the Washington Post reported that “165 of the MRAP trucks were distributed” to local police departments. In June of 2014, around the same time that Sheriff Knezovich was giving his presentation about the “true threats” facing local communities, the New York Times reported that “according to Pentagon data, police departments have received tens of thousands of machine guns; nearly 200,000 ammunition magazines; thousands of pieces of camouflage and night-vision equipment; and hundreds of silencers, armored cars and aircraft.” Sounds to me like they have all the same tools an army would have, but just because they have all the same things the military does, that doesn’t mean they use it the same way, right?

The LA Times reported earlier this month on findings by the Police Foundation regarding what they called an “excessive” and “unnecessary” use of force displayed by Stockton police in July of 2014. During their pursuit of bank robbers “32 officers unloaded more than 600 rounds during the hour-long rolling gun battle, which spanned three counties, 63 miles of highway and reached speeds of 120 mph“. In their defense, 14 police vehicles were disabled during the chase, but because of their actions, one of the hostages was struck by ten of the rounds coming from police. Investigators found that some officers engaged in “sympathetic fire” meaning that the only reason they shot their guns was because others were doing the same. That’s what’s called a mob-mentality and it’s not an uncommon experience during military operations.

The most talked about example of military-style tactics being used by police in recent history is what happened in Ferguson. CNN was just one of the news outlets that reported on what took place there.According to their report, police in Ferguson opened fire on the crowd. They attacked civilians and reporters with rubber bullets, pepper bullets, tear gas and stun grenades. No matter what you think about the events surrounding Ferguson, tear gas is considered a chemical weapon and it’s use is strictly prohibited in warfare by the Geneva Protocol. Technically these restraints don’t apply to local police, but that doesn’t mean we should accept this treatment.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of examples of excessive force by police. Another common problem is the training these officers receive. It’s obvious that they are being taught a shoot-first mentality where the ends justify the means. This is not the way it’s supposed to be. I don’t think we should totally disarm police, but there needs to be some restraint. Even more important is accountability. It probably comes as no surprise that the officers in Stockton and Ferguson didn’t face any severe punishment – that’s a problem.

Sheriff Knezovich would have you believe that police militarization is a myth – something made up by anti-government conspiracy theorists. It’s as clear as day to anyone who chooses to recognize the truth. It’s admitted that the police are given military surplus and we can tell by their actions that they intend to use it. My fear is that things will have to get much worse before they get any better.

The police are being told that we, the people are the enemy. The people are being told by the media that the police are the enemy. The truth is that both groups are being played off against each other. If we really want to get past all this, the people and the police have to come together and find common ground. We all want to live peaceful lives. I don’t believe that anyone wants to live in a vicious police state, even those who would be on the enforcement side of it, but that’s exactly what we’ll get if we don’t recognize our common humanity. Denying there’s a problem only makes it worse.

The Gun Is Civilization.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun... is a good guy with a gun.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun… is a good guy with a gun.

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument, or force me to do your bidding under threat of force.

Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that’s it.

In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

When I carry a gun, you cannot deal with me by force. You have to use reason and try to persuade me, because I have a way to negate your threat or employment of force.

"I'm afraid of the recoil."
“I’m afraid of the recoil.”

The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gang banger, and a single guy on equal footing with a carload of drunken guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.

There are plenty of people who consider the gun as the source of bad force equations. These are the people who think that we’d be more civilized if all guns were removed from society, because a firearm makes it easier for a [armed] mugger to do his job. That, of course, is only true if the mugger’s potential victims are mostly disarmed either by choice or by legislative fiat— it has no validity when most of a mugger’s potential marks are armed.

People who argue for the banning of arms ask for automatic rule by the young, the strong, and the many, and that’s the exact opposite of a civilized society. A mugger, even an armed one, can only make a successful living in a society where the state has granted him a force monopoly.

Then there’s the argument that the gun makes confrontations lethal that otherwise would only result in injury. This argument is fallacious in several ways. Without guns involved, confrontations are won by the physically superior party inflicting overwhelming injury on the loser. People who think that fists, bats, sticks, or stones don’t constitute lethal force, watch too much TV where people take beatings and come out of it with a bloody lip at worst.

The fact that the gun makes lethal force easier works solely in favor of the weaker defender, not the stronger attacker. If both are armed, the field is level. The gun is the only weapon that’s as lethal in the hands of an octogenarian as it is in the hands of a weight lifter. It simply wouldn’t work as well as a force equalizer if it wasn’t both lethal and easily employable.

Alison's first gun. It's pink.
Alison’s first gun. It’s pink.

When I carry a gun, I don’t do so because I am looking for a fight, but because I’m looking to be left alone. The gun at my side means that I cannot be forced, only persuaded. I don’t carry it because I’m afraid, but because it enables me to be unafraid. It doesn’t limit the actions of those who would interact with me through reason, only the actions of those who would do so by force. It removes force from the equation… and that’s why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Why You Want a No Trespassing Sign On Your Door.

I recently put a new sign on my front door that gives notice to agents that they are not welcome here and that if they come over here with the intent to trespass then official notice has already been given and the agents or officers are more easily sued.

NOTICE to all public servants
My new NOTICE to all public servants. Click to enlarge.

People often ask: If someone ‘Trespasses” onto my private property, what can I do? Can they be dealt with using force? How much force? Is it dependent upon each state (USA)?

Look up the trespassing laws for your locality, this will tell you what amount of “reasonable force” you may or may not be allowed to use. The point is that once you display the “Notice”, no further notice is necessary and you may now use reasonable force to get them to leave if they refuse to.

Good luck getting a policeman to tell you what actually counts as reasonable force for different degrees of trespassers though. Basically when I post this sign that states USC title 42 1983 it applies to all agents of government acting under color of law, and to see how this can be applied Continue reading “Why You Want a No Trespassing Sign On Your Door.”
